Sagres Birdwatching Festival 2026: Dates, Programme & Everything You Need to Know

The dates are confirmed: the 17th Sagres Birdwatching & Nature Activities Festival will take place from 2 to 5 October 2026 (Thursday to Sunday), once again turning this corner of the western Algarve into the birdwatching capital of southern Europe.
Organised by the Municipality of Vila do Bispo in partnership with SPEA – BirdLife Portugal and Associação Almargem, the festival is widely regarded as one of the most important nature observation events in Portugal, and one of the best birding gatherings anywhere in Europe.
This Year's Star: The Razorbill
The featured species for 2026 is the Razorbill (Alca torda), a striking seabird and exclusive breeder of the North Atlantic. Found from Greenland and North America across to northern Europe, the Razorbill migrates south along the entire Portuguese coast during autumn and winter. Its post-breeding migration begins precisely in October, making the festival the perfect window to spot this impressive diver, a bird capable of plunging tens of metres below the surface to catch sardines and anchovies.
The choice of a marine species highlights the festival's growing focus on ocean conservation and the threats facing seabirds, including accidental bycatch in fishing gear.
What to Expect for Sagres Birdwatching: Activities & Programme
While the full programme will be announced on 5 August 2026, with registrations opening on 2 September 2026, previous editions give a clear picture of what's in store. The 2025 festival featured 275 activities, 153 of them free, ranging from guided birding walks and boat trips to photography workshops, insect identification sessions, illustration classes, astronomy nights, and coastal clean-ups.

Guided birdwatching excursions across Sagres headland, Vale Santo, Cabranosa, and Cape St. Vincent
Boat trips to observe seabirds, dolphins, and whales off the southwestern coast
Photography and illustration workshops for all skill levels
Nature walks exploring the unique flora, reptiles, and insects of the Costa Vicentina
Children's activities designed to introduce young naturalists to field biology
Talks and lectures from researchers, conservationists, and wildlife experts
During the Festival, the Forte do Beliche will once again serve as the event’s headquarters. This is where you can collect your free wristband, check the updated programme, and sign up for last-minute activities. Set on one of Sagres’ most dramatic coastal headlands, the fortress becomes the meeting point for participants, guides, and nature lovers — a place where the Festival’s energy meets the historic atmosphere of this landmark.
Many activities sell out quickly, in 2025, 80 sessions reached full capacity, so early registration is strongly recommended.
Why Sagres? Europe's Birding Hotspot
Sagres sits on one of the most important migratory corridors in the Atlantic. Every October, thousands of raptors, storks, passerines, and seabirds funnel through the southwestern tip of Portugal on their way to wintering grounds in Africa. On a good day, hundreds of Northern Gannets can be seen passing off Cape St. Vincent, while the skies above the headland fill with eagles, harriers, and honey buzzards.
The 2025 edition recorded 148 species during the festival, with notable sightings including the Dotterel, Balearic Shearwater, Montagu's Harrier, Yelkouan Shearwater, Little Bustard, and European Honey Buzzard.

Getting Here

The neighbouring villages of Salema and Burgau (both within 15–20 minutes of Sagres) offer excellent alternatives with a quieter, local atmosphere.
