Best for: Families with children of any age. The only five-star property in Sagres, and consistently rated among the best family hotels Algarve travellers can book. Set directly on the sheltered Praia do Martinhal beach on the eastern edge of town, the Martinhal Sagres family resort features age-grouped kids' clubs (from 6 months to teens), five pools, the Finisterra Spa, a watersports centre, and three restaurants including O Terraço with its sunset views over the Atlantic. Memmo Baleeira (Design Hotels) from €150/night ★★★★

Best for: Couples, surfers, design-conscious travellers. A contemporary Algarve boutique hotel perched above the Porto da Baleeira fishing harbour, with sea-view rooms, an outdoor pool, indoor heated pool, spa, and a dedicated surf centre with board storage. The wood-fired Fornaria restaurant is a local favourite. Equidistant from Praia do Tonel and Praia da Mareta, it is a practical, stylish base for exploring the western Algarve.

 

Pousada de Sagres from €130/night ★★★★

Best for: Couples, history lovers, dramatic ocean views. Part of the historic Pousadas de Portugal heritage network, this clifftop pousada sits between Praia da Mareta and the Sagres Fortress, directly above the Atlantic. The pool terrace, with an unobstructed ocean view and the Cabo de São Vicente lighthouse visible to the west, is one of the most photogenic spots in the whole Algarve. Authentic, atmospheric, and the most affordable of the three hotels.

Surf Houses

Sagres is one of Europe's top surf destinations, and the village has earned a real reputation as a surf town.

Several dedicated surf camps in and around Sagres offer all-inclusive weekly packages combining accommodation, daily lessons with a qualified Algarve surf school, equipment rental, and transport to the best break of the day. July and August are peak season. The Martinhal and the Pousada de Sagres regularly sell out three to four months in advance. For the best mix of warm weather, calm seas, and availability, aim for the shoulder season:

 

• May and June: spring warmth, wildflowers on the clifftops, very manageable crowds.

• September and October: warmest sea temperatures of the year, surf picks up, prices drop 30 to 50 percent.

• November to April: quiet, dramatic Atlantic storms, powerful surf, ideal for experienced surfers and travellers chasing an authentic off-season Algarve experience.
