Sagres sits at the southwestern tip of mainland Europe, where the Atlantic Ocean meets towering cliffs and stretches of golden sand that remain refreshingly uncrowded, even in summer. Unlike the resort-heavy central Algarve, the beaches around Sagres are wild, dramatic, and surrounded by the protected landscape of the Costa Vicentina Natural Park.
Whether you are a surfer chasing powerful Atlantic swells, a family looking for calm and shallow waters, or a traveller in search of hidden coves with no one in sight, Sagres delivers. This guide covers the best beaches in and around Sagres, with practical tips to help you choose the right one for your trip.
Quick tip: Because Sagres sits on a headland facing three different directions, there is almost always a beach sheltered from the wind, no matter which way it blows. If one side is rough, the other will likely be calm.

Beaches in Sagres Town
Praia da Mareta — The Town Beach

Praia da Mareta is the closest beach to Sagres centre and the most popular in town, for good reason. This south-facing bay stretches for nearly 800 metres of golden sand, sheltered between rocky headlands that protect it from the worst of the Atlantic wind.
The water here is calmer and slightly warmer than on the western beaches, making it the best option in Sagres for swimming. Families will appreciate the shallow entry and the lifeguard service available during summer months. Snorkeling along the rocky sides of the bay can reveal small fish and sea life.
Practical info:
5-minute walk from the main square
Sunbed and umbrella rental in summer
Several restaurants and cafés within walking distance
Parking available nearby (arrives early in July and August)
Blue Flag beach with lifeguard (June–September)
Don't miss the fossilised coral reef at "Pedra do Sal", near the central beach access
Best for: Swimming, families with children, a relaxed beach day close to town. Want the best accommodation close to this beach? Book below now! 👇
Praia do Tonel — The Surf Icon

Just on the other side of the Sagres headland, Praia do Tonel faces west and takes the full force of the Atlantic. This is Sagres' most famous surf beach, with consistent waves that attract surfers from across Europe year-round.
Even if you don't surf, Tonel is worth visiting for its dramatic setting alone. The beach sits directly below the Fortaleza de Sagres (Sagres Fortress), and the views from the clifftop path above are spectacular, especially at sunset, when the light hits the cliffs and the ocean turns golden.
Practical info:
5-minute walk from town, with parking near the fortress
Several surf schools offer lessons for beginners (from around €35–40 per session)
Beach bar open during summer season
Can be very windy, bring a windbreaker
Strong currents: swim only when conditions are calm and you are an experienced swimmer
Water temperature: around 16°C in winter, up to 19–20°C in summer (a wetsuit is recommended)
Best for: Surfing (all levels with a school), watching surfers, sunset photography.
Beaches Just Outside Sagres (2–5 km)
Praia do Martinhal — Best for Families

About 2 km east of Sagres, Praia do Martinhal is a wide sandy beach set in the relatively sheltered Bay of Baleeira. The water here is almost always calmer than at the Atlantic-facing beaches around the headland, making it the safest and most family-friendly beach in the area.
The sand is soft and fine, perfect for sandcastles. Several small islets sit offshore, popular with divers who explore the underwater caves around them. Windsurfing is also excellent here thanks to reliable but manageable wind.
Practical info:
25-minute walk or 5-minute drive from Sagres centre
Lifeguard in summer
Martinhal Sagres Beach Resort behind the beach offers a restaurant
Sunbed rental available
Rarely overcrowded, even in peak season
Best for: Families with children, windsurfing, kayaking, a quieter alternative to Mareta. Book accommodation for you and family now. It’s easy and hassle free, just click the widget below! 👇
Praia do Beliche — The Most Beautiful

Often considered the most beautiful beach in the Sagres area, Praia do Beliche sits between the cliffs of Cabo de São Vicente and the Sagres headland. Towering 40-metre-high cliffs surround this small cove, providing shelter from both wind and waves, a rare combination on this coast.
The beach is accessed by a steep staircase cut into the cliff, which adds to the sense of discovery. The water is cleaner and calmer than at nearby Tonel, and the surf here is popular with intermediate surfers looking for slightly more manageable conditions.
Practical info:
4 km from Sagres, on the road to Cabo de São Vicente
Steep staircase access (not ideal for people with mobility issues)
Small beach bar open seasonally
Parking at the top of the cliff
Close to the Fortaleza do Beliche, worth a quick stop
Best for: Photography, intermediate surf, a scenic beach day, couples. Looking for a serene getaway? Look no further! 👇
Beaches East of Sagres (Towards Lagos)
Praia do Zavial — The Surfer's Favourite
About 10 km east of Sagres on the road towards Lagos, Praia do Zavial is a compact beach beloved by surfers and bodyboarders. The south-facing orientation means it catches swell differently from the west-coast beaches, often offering clean, rideable waves when conditions elsewhere are too big or too flat.
A small car park sits above the beach, and a popular restaurant (Restaurante Zavial) serves fresh fish with ocean views.
Practical info:
10 km from Sagres (15-minute drive)
Free parking above the beach
Restaurant with terrace overlooking the surf
No lifeguard
Popular with locals, a good sign
Best for: Surf and bodyboarding, lunch with a view.
Praia da Ingrina — The Calm Hideaway
A small, sheltered cove about 11 km east of Sagres, Praia da Ingrina is one of the calmest beaches in the region. The water is clear, shallow, and usually very still — making it ideal for snorkeling and relaxed swimming.
It is a favourite among locals and those in the know, and it rarely gets crowded. A small restaurant operates near the beach in summer.
Practical info:
11 km from Sagres, near the village of Raposeira
Small parking area
Crystal-clear water, excellent for snorkeling
Very limited facilities
Best for: Snorkeling, calm swimming, a peaceful escape. Book your stay here 👇
Praia do Barranco — Off the Beaten Path

Tucked away east of Sagres, Praia do Barranco is one of the area's most secluded beaches. Surf happens rarely, the bay is protected, but when it happens it offers a good wave with a stunning view. There are no facilities whatsoever, so bring everything you need.
This is also a beach favoured by naturists.
Practical info:
Accessed via a dirt track (a car with some clearance is recommended)
No facilities, no lifeguard
Bring water, food, and sun protection
Best for: Solitude, naturism, escaping the crowds completely.
Beaches North of Sagres (Costa Vicentina)
The beaches north of Sagres along the Costa Vicentina are among the most spectacular in Portugal, wild, vast, and framed by towering cliffs. These beaches are within the Vicentine Coast Natural Park and remain largely undeveloped. A rental car is essential to explore this stretch.
Praia do Telheiro — The Geological Wonder

Praia do Telheiro is not a typical beach day destination, it is a geological treasure. The rocks here display extraordinary colours and formations, shaped over millions of years, and the site is classified as a Geomonument. The beach is remote, accessed via an unpaved road, and there are no facilities.
Come here for the raw, untouched beauty and to witness one of the most unique coastal landscapes in Portugal.
Practical info:
8 km northwest of Sagres
Unpaved access road (a car with clearance is helpful)
No facilities whatsoever
Not suitable for swimming (strong currents)
Best for: Nature lovers, geology enthusiasts, photography, adventure seekers.
Praia da Cordoama — Wild and Vast

Praia da Cordoama is a long, wide beach backed by dramatic cliffs that rise over 100 metres above the sand. At low tide, it connects with the neighbouring Praia do Castelejo and Praia da Barriga to form a seemingly endless stretch of sand.
This is a popular surf spot, but the sheer size of the beach means it never feels crowded. The viewpoint at the top of the cliffs (Miradouro da Cordoama) is one of the most breathtaking in the Algarve.
Practical info:
12 km from Sagres (20-minute drive via Vila do Bispo)
Free parking near the beach
Small seasonal restaurant
Exposed to wind, check conditions before going
Access via a paved road followed by a short dirt track
Best for: Surfing, long beach walks, photography, experiencing the wild Costa Vicentina.
Praia do Castelejo — Dramatic Cliffs

Right next to Cordoama, Praia do Castelejo is framed by massive cliff walls and a distinctive rock formation to the east that gives it its name (meaning "little castle"). The beach has a rugged beauty that is hard to match anywhere in the Algarve.
Surf conditions here are similar to Cordoama, powerful and best suited for experienced surfers. There is a good restaurant at beach level with a terrace.
Practical info:
13 km from Sagres
Paved road access with parking at the beach
Restaurant O Sítio do Castelejo open year-round
Lifeguard in summer
Best for: Dramatic scenery, experienced surf, a meal with a wild ocean view.
Praia da Bordeira (Carrapateira) — The Endless Beach

Further north, near the village of Carrapateira, Praia da Bordeira is one of the largest beaches in the Algarve. A river crosses the sand before meeting the ocean, creating shallow warm pools that are perfect for children to play in.
The beach stretches for several kilometres, backed by dunes and wild vegetation. It is a favourite of both surfers and walkers. The village of Carrapateira, just above, has a few cafés and a laid-back surf town atmosphere.
Practical info:
20 km from Sagres (30-minute drive)
Large free parking area
Beach bar in summer
Gentler waves on the river side (good for beginners)
Powerful surf on the ocean side
Best for: Families (river pools), beginner surfers, long walks, experiencing the Algarve's wild side.

Practical Tips for Visiting Sagres Beaches
Water temperature: The Atlantic around Sagres is cool year-round. Expect around 15–16°C in winter and 19–21°C at the height of summer. If you plan to spend time in the water, a wetsuit is highly recommended outside of July and August — and even then, many surfers wear one.
Wind: Sagres is one of the windiest places in the Algarve. The Nortada (north wind) blows strongly in summer, especially in the afternoon. Morning visits tend to be calmer. If one beach is too windy, drive to the other side of the headland — you will often find completely different conditions.
Tides: Some beaches (like Prainha das Poças) can disappear completely at high tide. Always check the tide schedule before heading to smaller coves. You can find daily tide times on the Portuguese Hydrographic Institute website.
Getting around: A rental car is essential if you want to explore beyond the town beaches. The beaches along the Costa Vicentina are spread out and there is virtually no public transport serving them. Parking is free at all beaches listed in this guide.
Best time to visit: June to September offers the warmest weather and all facilities are open. May and October are excellent for fewer crowds, pleasant temperatures, and consistent surf. Spring brings wildflowers along the clifftop trails. Winter is for experienced surfers and those who love dramatic Atlantic storms.
